Manchester United: Ed Woodward has kept Mike Phelan where he belongs

Manchester United: Ed Woodward has kept Mike Phelan where he belongs - Manchester United

The overhaul must well and truly start at Manchester United, with changes quite clearly required across the whole rather awful system.

If you can even call it a system, anyway.

Still, the hunt for the inaugural technical director goes on as a prime candidate for it, Mike Phelan, was officially announced as the permanent assistant manager to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Phelan possesses valuable experience in this role, having worked so well under Sir Alex Ferguson. Clearly, he knows how to motivate players, is clever with his work on the touchline during games and is known to be a respected figure around Old Trafford. With Solskjaer still at the start of his elite managerial career, a mentor like Phelan could work wonders.

Why on earth did David Moyes ever get rid of him? Shocking stuff but at least the former Hull City boss is back where he truly belongs.

Indeed, making him the technical director would’ve stopped him from having the more hands-on approach he’s so good at for United. Furthermore, the 56-year-old had little prior experience as a technical director before rejoining the club in December. In fact, he only worked as one for Australian side Central Coast Mariners for a few months, not being especially specialized in the role.

A club the size of Manchester United need better in a role that’s so crucial to the elite teams in the world right now. Especially the first one for the club as they look to get to grips on such a practise. Indeed, that’s why links with Rio Ferdinand on that front should be just as much of a worry but that’s a different article for a different time.

Ed Woodward needs to move for an experienced, clever director of football to turn around his side’s woeful predicament. Be it someone with the “United DNA” or outside, he needs to be smart with hiring someone who knows the magnitude of the job and can make clever deals to help the rebuilding project.

The summer is crucial to the Red Devils’ future. Failure to packing the squad with quality talents could result in a bigger catastrophe next season and nobody more than Ed Woodward would be blamed for the downfall.

Not going for Phelan there was the best decision he’s made in a LONG time.
