Manchester United would have been expecting to brush aside Tranmere Rovers as they did on Sunday afternoon, but most fans won’t have predicted who the first-half scorers would be. Jesse Lingard, Harry Maguire and Phil Jones all managed to register, and fans loved it.
The man who Sir Alex Ferguson touted as someone who could be United’s “best ever player” has turned into quite the laughing stock over the past few years, considering the faces he pulls in games, but the goal gave fans a rare moment to celebrate a positive contribution. Just three minutes into the game he was already covered in mud, but then he popped up at the back post to make it 4-0 before half time.
His header looped across goal and into the left of the net, and it’s his first goal for the club since March 2014. United’s official Twitter account posted a picture of the 27-year-old celebrating, and captioned it “go on, Phil”. Loads of fans were quick to react.
