Sunderland were knocked out of the FA Cup by Gillingham after extra time last night and some of Manchester United’s fans enjoyed their despair.
While it may seem strange to see Red Devils’ fans revelling in their spiral down the division, there are some reasons behind it.
On that famous day in 2012, when Sergio Aguero scored perhaps the most famous goal in the history of the Premier League to win City’s first title since 1968, United were away at Sunderland.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men did all they could, securing a 1-0 win away from home, and were waiting to hear of the result from the Etihad Stadium.
As news filtered through that City had won it late on, United were devastated, but the Black Cats’ fans definitely weren’t. Indeed, they celebrated that news in front of the United players and fans, even performing the ‘Poznan’, a celebration often used by Manchester City fans. As you can imagine, that didn’t go down well with the famous old Scot, who said they won’t ‘forget’ what the fans said.
It’s something that has stuck with United fans to this day, so here’s how some of them reacted to Sunderland’s latest setback:
I honestly hope they liquidate
