Manchester United fans were remembering former manager Sir Alex Ferguson on what is his 33rd anniversary of becoming the club’s manager.
33 years ago today, the Red Devils appointed Ferguson as manager of the club, not knowing the impact he would go on to have.
Ferguson started off by ending the club’s long wait for a league title by winning the first-ever title of the Premier League era. Another 12 league titles would follow as the north-west club would go on to make their way to the top of English football, beating Liverpool’s record of 18 league titles.
The Scotsman was also successful in European competition, lifting the Champions League on two separate occasions as part of the treble in 1999 and as part of the league and European Cup double in 2008.
However, Ferguson was beaten by former Ajax and Barcelona manager Rinus Michels to top-spot in a list of greatest club managers of all-time (via France Football).
Fans flooded Twitter with messages lauding the 77-year-old after his successful spell at Old Trafford.
Here is a selection of tweets from the Old Trafford faithful:
A father figure for millions worldwide.
All I now wish is this glorious man lives a 100 years, enjoys good health and a happy life. He truly deserves this. My GOAT.

Emotional. They ruined the name, the success, the way of play, the OT fear factor, the comeback kings, the never die attitude and more that he build right after he left. #MUFC
