Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on New Year’s Day will have been a wake-up call for many United fans. Indeed, their victories against Manchester City and Tottenham may have papered over the cracks, but there are obvious problems afoot and fans aren’t pleased with who the club are being linked with.

ESPN have reported that the Red Devils are eyeing up Sean Longstaff and Emre Can as options to add to their midfield this month. The former has played 14 games for Newcastle this term, but WhoScored have rated him just 6.31/10 for his contributions. Whereas 25-year-old Emre Can has made just two starts for Juventus this season.

In fact, when looking at a comparison on WhoScored, Scott McTominay actually beats them both in terms of aerial duels won per game, as well as tackles won and interceptions made. Elsewhere, Fred makes more key passes per game as well as takes more shots over the same period, so it's not as if either would improve the ranks when looking at those numbers.

That’s hardly exciting reading for Man United fans, and many supporters expressed their views on Twitter. A United news aggregator @utdreport on Twitter relayed the report to their followers and the response was predictably negative.
