Manchester United fighting off Manchester City for Harry Maguire’s signature this summer was a huge coup for them, but, however good the Englishman is, he’s not going to solve all their defensive problems. They may have conceded just 12 goals this season, but they’ve leaked some in crucial moments of games when they should be keeping the opposition out.
The Liverpool game at Old Trafford was a perfect example, where a marking mix-up allowed Liverpool to get back on level terms. Victor Lindelof has been Maguire’s partner for much of the season so far, and he’s done okay, but he’s not title-winning level.
WhoScored notes Maguire makes an average of 1.6 interceptions per game, whereas Lindelof makes 0.7, and Jose Mourinho has cast doubts over his aerial ability, saying on Sky Sports: “He is not especially good in the air” and “he can be bullied in a one versus one in the box”. (Quote via The Sun)
If Gerard Pique, one of the best defenders in the world, was still at the club, perhaps things might be a bit different. Pique was at United from 2004 until he left for Barcelona in 2008. Utd Report posted some of Pique’s comments about his time at United, which were reported by The Guardian’s Observer section. United fans were quick to show how much they’d love him to come back and partner Maguire.
Here’s what Pique said:
Gerard Pique: “I grew up a lot there [Manchester]. I am who I am because of the period I had at #mufc, even though I didn’t play as much as I wanted to — in my position there were two centre-backs who were among the top three in the world at the time.” #mulive [observer]
