Manchester United are reportedly close to agreeing a new deal with goalkeeper David de Gea, according to reports from the Guardian.
The Spaniard’s contract is up next summer, and while there has been plenty of speculation linking him with a move away from the club – primarily to Real Madrid – it now looks as though he will sign a new deal at Old Trafford, worth a reported £290,000-a-week (per @UtdReport).
Having kept 129 clean sheets in 366 appearances for the Red Devils since his arrival at the club in 2012, de Gea now surely has to be deemed one of the best goalkeepers in world football after winning his club’s Player of the Season three years in a row as well as winning inclusion into the FIFA FIFPro World XI in 2018, so you would expect that tying him down to a new long-term contract would go down well with the club’s supporters.
However, that doesn’t seem to be the case as a couple of fans are vying for a change of personnel between the sticks, with Atletico Madrid and Slovenia shot-stopper Jan Oblak seemingly top of their wish list. Touted by the Express with a move for the custodian – who won the La Liga Best Goalkeeper Award last season – it seems the former Benfica stopper has a lot of support amongst Man United fans online.
Here’s how some of the other United fans reacted to the news of de Gea’s potential new contract on Twitter…
Wanted Oblak….. New faces needed

He’s declining and it’s obvious offering him 290k and he continues to perform like this past year we are going to regret

Big mistake, should have been sold last summer

The club will regret this massively and will be stuck with a declining player on massive wages, whom the club will be trying to shift (with Zero luck) in a year or two. Total Mad men the people in charge of this football club. Christ!

Terrible news. Another deadwood contract. De Gea is an average keeper overall. He’s at times is a top class shot stopper, but he hasn’t been that in a while, and he’s tragic at everything else a keeper does.
