Jamie Redknapp has praised Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after their recent results – though reserved a special mention for midfielder Fred following his performance at the weekend.
United’s successive wins over Tottenham and Manchester City in the space of three days have transformed the outlook of the Red Devils’ season, with Solskjaer’s team now trailing the Champions League places by five points.
In his column for the Daily Mail, Redknapp hailed the team for turning their form around in the past week, though he outlined Brazilian midfielder Fred as someone who perhaps deserves more credit than others.
He said: “It would be too much to say Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have turned a corner but what an uplifting few days for the Norwegian.
“Marcus Rashford is on fire and getting bums off seats. Mason Greenwood, who I hear does amazing things in training, is such a prospect, too. But the player I’m most pleased for is Fred.
“The stick he received was remarkable. From ‘useless’ to ‘waste of money’, he was called it all. Maybe he is not the answer for Manchester United in the long term. Maybe he won’t be their midfield lynchpin for years to come.
“But he has dug deep and refused to let the critics win. He was superb against City. In the same way everyone was quick to criticise, let’s give him the credit he deserves, too.”
It is easy to see where criticism for Fred may have come from. Signing for £47m in the summer of 2018, Fred has netted just one goal in United colours since, while his place in the side was doubted by Gary Neville earlier this season.
However, the 26-year-old has worked his way into the team and played every minute of the last nine Premier League matches – including their current run of five games without defeat.
Fred has never been prolific (scoring 15 times in 155 Shakhtar appearances), though his run of games is surely a sign of support from his manager as well as his upturn in form, especially as he was in and out of the team throughout his first season at Old Trafford.
Therefore, praise is indeed deserved from Redknapp as United continue to improve.
Can Fred ever prove to be worth £52m?
