Clearly, Manchester United have a hugely important summer ahead of them.

Indeed, after a largely up and down season, it's now time for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to establish his own team and cement his own principles. Still, with it being the time of year it is, signings are even more important.

So, United have been linked with both Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Declan Rice since the opening of the window. Exciting stuff, right? Well, it has now emerged that (as per France Football) their chances of signing a West Ham youngster have significantly increased. It's just not the talented Englishman, but teammate Issa Diop.

Obviously, the Frenchman impressed immensely last season, featuring in 33 Premier League games, scoring and assisting one. Indeed, at just 22-years-old, Diop would also provide United with added youth and energy, something they are clearly targeting following the signing of winger Daniel James.

However importantly, the former Toulouse man would also add some much-needed defensive stability. Statements in regards to youth are all well and good but what they need right now is someone to come in and improve things right away.

Diop is valued at £31.5m (per TransferMarkt) and it's not difficult to see why. Standing at 6ft 4in, the Frenchman was an absolute rock at the back for West Ham last season. Remarkably, where United conceded 40 goals less than West Ham the season prior, last season they conceded just one less.

A stark contrast to say the least.

The young defender proved to be strong both in the air and with his feet, winning an average of 2.3 aerial duels a game and finishing the season with an impressive 86% pass completion (per WhoScored). While it'd be too much to say he's the finished article just yet, the stats would suggest he's on his way to becoming a formidable defender and United have to ensure they grow together.

Sky Sports have reported United are willing to pay £45m with an additional player to capture his services, which would obviously be an expensive purchase. Still, he might just be worth it.

United fans, what do you make of this transfer? Is it too much money for an unproven quantity? Comment below.
