Manchester United are continuing to keep tabs on Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini, according to reports from Italy.
According to Calciomercato, the midfielder has a release clause of €30m (£25.76m) in his contract with the Serie A club.
Pellegrini has been a long-time transfer target for Manchester United, who reportedly made contact with Roma about the player back in May, according to the print edition of Corriere dello Sport [via Sport Witness].
This time last year, The Sun reported that the Old Trafford club were lining up a mid-season transfer bid, with Corriere dello Sport claiming [via Football Italia] that his agent Giampiero Pocetta flew to England to listen to offers for him.
The Italian also performs quite favourably for several metrics in comparison to United midfielders Paul Pogba, Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.
Pellegrini’s assists tally is the same as that quartet combined, while his average of 3.3 key passes per game is higher than anyone in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
His average of 1.2 interceptions per game is only slightly below McTominay’s 1.3 and higher than Fred (0.9), Matic (0.3) and Pogba (0.2), illustrating that he is adept at snuffing out danger as well as utilising the ball to good effect.
With Pellegrini outperforming Manchester United’s current central midfielders for several metrics, those in his position at Old Trafford may be conscious of their first team prospects if he comes to the club.
McTominay might not have as much to fear as the others, with the Scot being United’s most-used midfielder this season with 1,329 minutes (as per TransferMarkt).
Matic is perhaps the player in greatest danger if Pellegrini ends up at Old Trafford – the Serbian has played the least of United’s central midfield options with just 340 minutes this term (as per TransferMarkt) and only two league starts prior to the injury that he picked up on international duty last month.
With the 31-year-old struggling for game-time as it is, Pellegrini’s potential arrival could be the prompt for him to seek pastures new.
Manchester United fans, do you think Matic would leave if Pellegrini signs for the club? Have your say by commenting below!
