Mason Greenwood could be the replacement for the potentially outgoing Romelu Lukaku, according to ESPN.
It is being reported by the publication that the club is still considering selling the Belgian forward and may not replace him due to the emergence of Greenwood this summer.
Lukaku’s proposed move to Juventus looked on until Manchester United pulled out of a move for Paulo Dybala, who was involved in a potential swap deal.
The club still remain in the market for Croatia international Mario Mandzukic, however, a deal is not easy due to a strained relationship between the two clubs.
The breakdown over a move for Dybala has seen Internazionale come back in the frame for Lukaku, and they remain the most likely club for the 26-year-old.
Greenwood replacing Lukaku would be a big gamble for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in terms of expecting a youngster with precious little experience to replicate the form of the club’s second-top scorer last season, however, his goalscoring record suggests that he can shoulder the responsibility.
The 17-year-old is quite prolific at youth level and scored across three different age groups last season. The England youth international scored 26 goals last season across the under-18, under-19 and under-23 age groups. And it seems Greenwood has carried his promising touch into the senior squad, scoring against Leeds United and Internazionale on the club’s tour of Asia this summer.
A scout report written about him by the International Champions Cup website spoke of the youngster’s ability to create with both feet and talked up his strength on the ball, which could go some way into helping deal with any loss of a physical threat through Lukaku’s potential departure.
It seems that the club’s senior players aren’t performing up to standard, and so giving Greenwood a chance would be favourable, especially with the club not signing Dybala and Bruno Fernandes. Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez both combined for just seven goals last season, as Manchester United struggled with goals in the Premier League, finishing fifth out of the top six teams.
Greenwood is obviously an exciting talent, and his goalscoring record mixed together with the inability of the senior players to provide consistent goals means he should be given the chance this season.
