Manchester United: Paul Scholes’ comments on Bruno Fernandes prompt fan reactions

Loads of Manchester United fans have been reacting to Paul Scholes’ comments on Bruno Fernandes, as the club legend compared the midfielder to Eric Cantona and Teddy Sheringham.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Friday Football Special, Scholes noted “the one thing with Bruno is he doesn’t look like a central midfielder to me, he’s an out and out number 10. He’s great on the ball, always on the half turn and he’s the link that United really needed.”
“They lacked that quality in midfield and since he came in he’s had that. He can feed the ball in to players, he’s got a great shot on him and he looks like a real leader as well. United had lacked that.”
The former England international added “whether he can play in midfield in a two, that’s yet to be seen. He’s more like an Eric Cantona, a Teddy Sheringham – he can beat players as well. He is somebody who brings what was sadly missing at Old Trafford and he seems to have livened up everyone. The team is playing well and they look like scoring goals.”
Since moving to Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in January for £49.5m, Fernandes has certainly made up for lost time, scoring 3 goals and producing 4 assists for United so far (Transfermarkt).
The midfield maestro has made 5 appearances in the Premier League under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, netting 2 goals, taking 3.8 shots on average, and averaging 2.2 key passes per game in the English top flight (WhoScored). His market value is currently estimated at £43.2m via Transfermarkt, perhaps only down on the fee he signed for due to the ongoing pandemic.
As expected, a large section of the United faithful reacted to Scholes’ thoughts on Twitter, with one supporter suggesting he was “spot on,” and another saying “Bruno is a gem.” Several fans are also clearly excited to see the Portuguese international build a partnership with Red Devils talisman Paul Pogba.

He has both the attributes and football brain to play anywhere in the midfield. We saw what he could do playing deep in his debut against wolves and we’ve also seen him as a CAM. When Pogba comes in, I’d like to see Pogba as the deep lying playmaker and him as the free role CAM.

He doesn’t have the physical attributes that Pogba has so I don’t think Ole would be as tempted to play him in a two as he would with Pogba and rightly so, Bruno is a gem 💎
