Manchester United will offer £100m for Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho in January, according to The Sun.
The Red Devils have bolstered their squad during the summer after the arrivals of £80m defender Harry Maguire from Leicester, £50m right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and £15m winger Daniel James from Swansea, but are reportedly desperate to obtain the 19-year-old’s signature when the transfer window re-opens on January 1st.
The Sun report that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be handed all of the £75m from the sale of Romelu Lukaku to spend on a creative midfielder in five months time, with Sancho top of the Norwegian’s wishlist.
Sancho’s rise to prominence has been well documented in recent seasons. Having left Manchester City in 2017, the starlet shone for Bundesliga titans Borussia Dortmund last term, scoring 13 goals while registering 19 assists in all competitions. Indeed, over the course of last season, he averaged more key passes per game (1.9 per WhoScored) than anyone in the Red Devils’ squad.
This time out, Sancho has seemingly picked up where he left off – scoring two and assisting two in Dortmund’s opening two fixtures. With 2 key passes a game so far this season, only Paul Pogba has averaged so thus far with 2.5, so Sancho certainly would bring an element of creativity.
The former Watford academy graduate has just signed a new deal with Dortmund, however, worth a reported £190,000-a-week.
This means that United will have to pay through the nose to secure his signature next summer, possibly north of the rumoured £100m.
A Manchester United club source said: “The money is certainly there and Ole knows that.
“Everyone knows January is always a difficult market but if it’s the difference between keeping United in the top-four mix, the owners won’t hesitate to back the manager.”
Sancho is ready-made for the Premier League going off the stats above. Having bravely left his homeland two years ago for a fresh challenge in the Bundesliga, his career has sky-rocketed.
United have indeed proven to be willing to pay big money for British talent from their business this summer and, if they do the same on Sancho, they will be getting a creative force who can help fire the frontline.
