Loads of Manchester United fans have been reacting to an iconic goal from veteran Juan Mata, as Sunday marked five years to the day since his incredible scissor-kick against Liverpool at Anfield.
The former Spanish international has scored plenty of screamers throughout his decorated career. Although the dead ball specialist is mostly known for taking set-pieces and creating chances for others, one of his popular acrobatic efforts has had supporters drooling on Twitter over the weekend.
United’s official Twitter account shared footage of the Spaniard’s goal in the Premier League, a match-winning effort that moved the Red Devils five points clear of the Merseyside club and cemented their place in the top four (BBC). Taking a high ball from Angel di Maria, Mata let rip with a stunning aerial finish, lashing a low ball past goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and sending the away end into scenes of jubilant celebration.
The 31-year-old has netted 48 goals and provided 42 assists in over 200 appearances for the Manchester club, and it is fair to say a large section of the Old Trafford faithful will always remember the “unforgettable” volley. Several fans renamed the Liverpudlian ground to “Juanfield” while another added Mata’s contribution earned him a “hero status.”
