It is thought that Dias is an alternative to Leicester City star Harry Maguire, who the Old Trafford giants have already had a bid rejected for.
O Jogo (via Sport Witness) were unsure how much the bid was; however, they are led to believe it was below Dias’ current release clause.
Benfica have already made more than their fair share of money from sales this summer, and aren’t in a position where they have to sell, according to the Portuguese outlet.
As stated above, Manchester United have been failing so far in their attempts to sign their primary centre-back target Maguire, and with just over a week to go in the transfer window, they may start looking at other targets. This makes links with Dias fairly plausible.
Dias was a part of the Benfica side that clinched the Liga NOS title last season, as the Lisbon-based outfit saw off competition from Porto. The youngster played 32 league games last season, while also assuming captaincy responsibilities in the Europa League at the young age of 21.
Still, both 26 years of age and having racked up over 60 league appearances each in divisions as strong as the Premier League and Serie A, Maguire and Koulibaly are obviously the more experienced centre-halves (via WhoScored).
Dias should be no more than a backup target for Manchester United. Both Maguire and Kalidou Koulibaly could be available for the right price, and they would be much better options than the young Portugal international.
Maguire is the club’s primary target and has had a superb last year finishing in eighth with Leicester City in the Premier League and reaching the World Cup semi-final with England. Meanwhile, Koulibaly is an experienced centre-back in European competitions, having made more than 50 appearances in the Europa League and Champions League.
The Red Devils should continue pursuing Maguire and Koulibaly, who would add experience to the centre of their defence. And if both fail, only then should the club attempt to go for the 22-year-old Dias.
