Manchester United are set to make a concrete bid for Bruno Fernandes in the next three weeks, according to a report by The Independent.
It is claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are prepared to try and sign the Sporting Lisbon midfielder for a fee of around £50million.
However, that figure is not thought to be enough as the Liga NOS outfit are already said to have rejected previous advancements from the Premier League side for their 24-year-old star, despite the confidence United are thought to have regarding a future deal.
Playing predominantly as a central midfielder (WhoScored), he found the back of the net 32 times and provided his team-mates with an additional 18 assists in his 53 appearances across all competitions (Transfermarkt), making him an extremely lethal marksman. Only Paul Pogba can get anywhere near those figures from that area of the pitch, as he managed to get 13 goals in his 35 Premier League matches last season.
Going by the individual stats of last season compiled by WhoScored as well, it would seem Fernandes would also be a brilliant option to team up with the France international and give Manchester United the attacking prowess they lacked last season. Out of the Premier League top six, only Chelsea scored fewer goals.
The 24-year-old was exceptional with the ball at his feet, as he managed an average of 3.6 shots per 90 minutes, 3.2 key passes per game and managed to draw 2.4 fouls from the opposition. Pogba managed to provide United with 3 shots on average, 1.6 key passes and draw 2 fouls per game when he looked to go forward.
As highlighted by Total Football Analysis, Fernandes also likes to make late runs forward and could provide Pogba with an added weapon in the attack as it is something that he can exploit with his exceptional passing ability.
Because of his versatility, as Transfermarkt points out that he can play in a number of different positions, he has the ability to slot into any of the formations that Solskjaer likes to use – with 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-1-2 systems being used a handful of times.
Fernandes appears to be a player that would complement Pogba immensely at Manchester United if he were to join and could provide them with the attacking bite they have lacked in the middle of the field.
Only time will tell as to whether £50m is enough for Sporting to let their 24-year-old star leave this summer. As the report by The Independent mentioned, it would not be a surprise if the Red Devils had to hand over a figure larger than that.
But, with all his qualities, it is a deal Manchester United should look at doing no matter the cost.
