Romelu Lukaku and Matteo Darmian could be set to leave Manchester United after being left out of the club’s squad for their friendly in Norway. According to the Evening Standard, the latter was a notable absentee with little mention of the fact he wasn’t there, while they claim the former is clear to seek a new club.
The Old Trafford giants are on their way to Norway to face Kristiansund, a club in manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s hometown.
Lukaku has long been linked with a move to Internazionale with the Serie A club even having a bid rejected for the Belgian forward in the region of £50m.
A move away from Old Trafford has been on the cards this summer after the emergence of news the 26-year-old wasn’t ready to play second fiddle to Marcus Rashford. The 6 foot 2 striker is also said to be keen to link up with Inter manager Antonio Conte, labelling the Italian as the ‘best in the world.’
Meanwhile, Darmian played just seven games last season, despite the obvious struggles in defence for Manchester United, as they conceded a club record 54 goals in the Premier League. Darmian has also been linked with a move away from Old Trafford with Spanish side Valencia said to have held talks with the player’s agent.
Letting Lukaku and Matteo Darmian leave really does make no sense from a Manchester United point of view. Both would require replacements, and with there being just over a week left in the transfer window, time is running out.
With the club struggling to get Harry Maguire over the line after a failed bid, it would come as some surprise if Darmian is allowed to leave the club, despite his little appearances. No one else in the defence has shown that they’re up to the standard required after conceding 70 goals in all competitions last season.
If Lukaku leaves and a replacement isn’t found, the club will be relying on Anthony Martial and Rashford to provide the firepower. And last season showed that both can’t be trusted to last the full season upfront. Rashford and Martial combined for 25 goals last season, which was less than Pierre Emerick Aubameyang scored on his own (31).
Lukaku and Darmian should not be allowed to leave the club as finding replacements would prove difficult with such little time left in the window.
