Manchester United should make outrageous attempt to poach Raheem Sterling

Manchester United endured a disappointing end to the summer transfer window.

Jose Mourinho made it clear that signing a new centre-back was a priority but the Red Devils failed to land a new defender after targeting Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire. Mourinho also wanted to sign a new winger, and reports suggested United attempted to sign Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan as well as Willian from Chelsea. Unfortunately for Mourinho, the Brazilian chose to stay at Stamford Bridge following Antonio Conte’s dismissal.

United made a winning start to the Premier League season with goals from Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw handing them an opening day win over Leicester. It’s likely the Portuguese will target a centre-back when the window reopens in January. The former Chelsea boss may also seek to add another attacker to his forward line.

One man he should attempt to sign is Manchester City superstar – Raheem Sterling. Valued at £81m by Transfermarkt, the England international has developed into a key player for the Citizens since leaving Liverpool in 2015 for £50m. Sterling was crucial for Pep Guardiola in City’s title-winning season last year, netting 18 goals and notching 11 assists in the Premier League. He kicked off the new campaign with a goal against Arsenal.

Despite his excellent form, speculation persists that the 23-year-old could leave the club. Reports suggest that City have been unable to agree on a new long-term deal with the forward fuelling rumours he could be set to depart. United should take advantage and lure him to Old Trafford.

City have been unable to find an agreement with Sterling on wages and United could be willing to offer him a huge pay rise to leave the Citizens. The Red Devils proved they would spend whatever it takes to land their targets by making Alexis Sanchez one of the highest paid players in the world back in January. Sterling could follow suit.

Carlos Tevez was the last player to represent both Manchester clubs – could Raheem Sterling be next?
