Manchester United: Solskjaer keeping tabs on Kai Havertz

Manchester United are set to make a bid for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz next summer, according to Sport 1.

The 20-year-old is a rising star in Germany and has attracted the interest of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including United, who are apparently lining up a move for him next summer.

Alongside the Red Devils, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea are reportedly planning on a swoop for the Leverkusen man next summer, per Sport 1’s report.

Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid are also though to be keen on bringing Havertz in, so he is expected to have an extremely tough decision on his hands next year.

Havertz scored 20 goals in all competitions last term alongside providing seven assists, and has already found the net twice for Leverkusen this season – once in the Bundesliga and once in the DFB-Pokal – further proving his class at the top-level. Indeed, this season he’s averaging almost double the number of key passes per game (4, via WhoScored) than anyone in the United squad (Paul Pogba is averaging 2.5) as well as many dribbles over the same period as the Red Devils’ key man on that front – Anthony Marital with 4.

The attacking midfielder has already been described as world-class by compatriot Matthias Sammer and Total Football Analysis noted his ‘extraordinary’ behaviour off the ball to create space, as well as his ‘good off-ball movement’, a problem the Telegraph previously pointed out in the United squad.

Metro report that although Havertz is thought to have a good relationship with Bayern, he is a lifelong Barcelona fan, which could ultimately sway a decision on his future.

The stats and comments on Havertz above certainly suggest he can bring an element of drive to the United midfield and his key passing should especially be noted considering the fact the Red Devils reportedly went cold on Bruno Fernandes (another goal scoring midfielder) due to concerns about his distribution. With that in mind, the German international looks pretty ideal to strengthen the club’s engine room.
