Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern can’t wait to see their side get going this season with the new campaign just two weeks away.
The Red Devils kick things off at home to West Ham and will be looking to get three points on the board as soon as possible as they aim to win the league this time around.
They could have at least five competitors for the title, though, and so the squad is going to need to be right at it for the whole campaign – something Jose Mourinho will be demanding.
Competition for places in the side, then, is of paramount importance and that is something second choice goalkeeper Sergio Romero knows all too well about.
Indeed, as quoted by The Manchester Evening News, he has said that he is happy that David de Gea looks to be staying at the club as it means that he will have to push himself to try and get between the sticks.
He said when asked if he was happy the Spanish star was staying put:
“Yes, it’s good for me. He is a friend and we will keep working hard to help each other out in training. If he does well then I do well. So in that way, the level of performance will always be high.”
Positive words for United, then, as that culture of pushing one another was ripe under Sir Alex Ferguson and we all know what that led to.
Romero is one of the strongest second choice goalkeepers around and with David de Gea in front of him United have two top options.
And, in seeing Romero say these words, United fans can rest easy that in goal they will have two players determined to make the difference this season and perform at their highest level – key in a title chase.
