Manchester United face a fight on their hands to keep hold of Paul Pogba in January, with Real Madrid preparing another move for the Frenchman.
According to OK Diario, Madrid are preparing a move for Pogba which would see them swap German midfielder Toni Kroos for the United talisman.
Pogba had been linked with a move away from Old Trafford throughout the season but remained with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men as both the English and European transfer windows passed.
However, this doesn’t appear to have put Zinedine Zidane and Madrid off making their move for Pogba, with the club now weighing up a move which would see two World Cup-winning midfielders swap places between two of Europe’s giants. The report claims the Red Devils did try to sign Kroos in the summer and would be open to a move should he be included in the deal, over six years after he reportedly reached a verbal agreement with the club.
Kroos has been a regular for Madrid over the last few years which has seen them capture three Champions League titles in the last four years.
The German midfielder has cemented himself as one of the top ball-playing midfielders in Europe in terms of stature, and completed an impressive 93% of his 1931 La Liga passes last season. To put that into context, only two players completed more than that at Old Trafford last time out on average, so it’s clear the 29-year-old would bring at least an element of control to the ranks.
The former Bayern Munich man is a key figure for both club and country and hasn’t been afraid to call out players he feels aren’t contributing to the cause to cement his place as one of the top players for Germany. Indeed, he called out Man City winger Leroy Sane for an apparent lack of commitment for Germany just last year.
Pogba, meanwhile, has started the season well for Man United, contributing two assists in the Premier League already despite not hitting the back of the net as yet. Still, back in June, he did tell reporters he was ready for a new challenge.
Kroos would be as good as anyone really if they are to move Pogba on and bring someone else in.
The German has shown himself to be one of the better midfield players in Europe in the last few years and would slot in nicely to the Old Trafford midfield. With the Frenchman dispossessed 2.5 times per game last season, having someone who can operate in the centre of the park and dictate tempo – something Kroos has shown an ability to do – might offer the team more in terms of build-up play.
