Ever since the introduction of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United’s defensive stature has improved drastically.
Indeed, the Red Devils have only conceded seven goals in 11 Premier League games under him, including keeping five clean-sheets.
That being said, the Paris Saint-Germain defeat showed a need for an experienced candidate at the heart of defence to solidify them into building a defensive fortress when it comes to taking on truly top tier opposition. Surely the Red Devils are looking at many options to bring in the summer and the latest defender they’ve targeted is AC Milan’s captain, Alessio Romagnoli.
According to reports (from Calciomerto via Manchester Evening News), United are set to fight Chelsea and Juventus for the Italian’s services. Romagnoli’s superb work at Milan hasn’t gone unnoticed and he’s been rewarded for his hard work with the captain’s armband. Recording impressive stats like 5.4 clearances per game and close to averaging one interception and tackle per game (stats via WhoScored), he’s proven to be a rock at Milan’s defence.
However, Romagnoli isn’t necessarily an upgrade over his Serie A counter-part Kalidou Koulibaly, who was linked with a move to the Theatre of Dreams yesterday by talkSPORT. He’s still lacking in European experience and as compared to Koulibaly’s 13 clean-sheets this season(stats via Transfermarkt), he’s only helped Milan keep 5 clean-sheets (stats via Transfermarkt)
Neither is Romagnoli as strong or commanding as Koulibaly but has maintained his own as a reliable figure whose defensive intelligence makes him such an asset for Milan.
While Romagnoli could be a smart buy for United, they shouldn’t expect instant results from the developing centre-back which they would get from the experienced Napoli defender.
