The Transfer Tavern is filled with Manchester United fans this afternoon, hoping to hear the latest on the future of captain Wayne Rooney whilst guzzling down some fine ale.
It had been suggested by The Telegraph that the England skipper could abruptly end his Old Trafford career before the Chinese transfer window slams shut next Tuesday, with Super League clubs interested in his services.
But according to The Independent, Rooney now wants to stay in England and find a new Premier League club, meaning any United exit will now take place at the end of the season.
It’s claimed Rooney’s representatives travelled to the Far East but decided the quality of football was ‘beneath’ the veteran forward at this point in his career, still aged just 31. That is despite a ‘huge offer’ worth in excess of £500k per-week reportedly being on the table already.
The Independent have been told Rooney still feels he has something to offer in the Premier League and would prefer to stay in England for both ‘footballing and family reasons’.
It’s further alleged that there is already interest within the English top flight, although Rooney’s wages could prove problematic as few other Premier League clubs will be able to justify his earnings at Old Trafford.
It appears Rooney will still be a United player until the summer at the earliest.
