Jose Mourinho remains a polarising figure at Manchester United following their inconsistent start to the Premier League season.

United have two wins and two defeats from their opening four fixtures which has seen the Portuguese become favourite to be the first manager to lose his job this season. Mourinho was widely criticised after the 3-0 defeat which led to a meltdown in front of the media. However, the Red Devils responded with a victory against Burnley heading into the international break.

The former Chelsea manager was desperate to strengthen his defence in the summer window and lamented chief executive Ed Woodward for not securing one of his top targets. United had targeted both Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire but failed to get both deals over the line. The Red Devils also failed in moves for Jerome Boateng and Diego Godin. When the window reopens, expect a new defender to be top of Mourinho’s shortlist.

One man he should consider signing is Juventus defender – Medhi Benatia. Valued at £20.7m by Transfermarkt, the Morocco international established himself as one of the best defenders in the world playing for Roma back in 2014 which earned him a move to Bayern Munich before later joining Juventus. However, he made just 20 Serie A appearances last season, and reports earlier in the window suggested he would be allowed to leave.

The 31-year-old would be an inspired addition to United’s back four and give Mourinho the world-class defender he has been looking for. Benatia averaged 1.4 tackles per game in the Serie A last season – no Manchester United centre-back managed more. The Moroccan also reads the game expertly, averaging 2.2 interceptions per game – more than any Manchester United defender. His experience playing at the highest level with Bayern and Juve could prove vital in beating Manchester City to the Premier League title.

This is a move United simply have to make.
