The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that they can end their season on a high with a victory in the FA cup final after enduring a rather average Premier League campaign.
Jose Mourinho’s side looked to be strong title contenders at the start of the season but rivals Man City blew every team out the water and stormed to the title. United love to spend, everyone is aware of that, but their record signing of Paul Pogba hasn’t quite had the impact many thought he would.
The Frenchman is valued at £81 million by Transfer Markt and although he can produce dominating and match-winning performances by himself, Pogba cannot seem to perform consistently well for United. Statistically with 6 goals and 12 assists this season, people would normally class that as a top return for a central midfielder, but not one who cost as much as Pogba did.
Pogba has so far struggled during Jose Mourinho’s reign but our punters feel that Manchester United would make a huge mistake if they got rid of him this summer. The 25-year-old when on-form is practically unstoppable, he glides past defenders and has terrific strength to hold off trouble from the opposition, then can pick out a killer pass.
It seems that the Frenchman still hasn’t found his proper role at Man United having been utilised in an array of different ways at Old Trafford such as sitting back, trying to be a box-to-box player or as an attacking midfielder.
Mourinho, then, must give more time. It’s never easy for a big player to settle at a new club, and although he’s now been back in Manchester for two years, the Portuguese must not overreact.
Pogba must remain at Man United as he could single-handedly propel the side to the next level any time he wants to, he just has to be given permission to do his thing at the heart of the midfield. It would be easy to move him on quickly, but in this case, patience will likely pay off for Mourinho.
