The Manchester United fans were feeling content after they concluded a fine piece of business to bring Alexis Sanchez to the club, but their failure to land Lucas Moura could prove to be a missed opportunity.
Following one of the most highly-publicised transfer sagas of the modern Premier League era, Sanchez finally departed Arsenal and joined Manchester United who successfully snatched him from under the noses of their bitter local rivals. Understandably, the Red devils propping up the bar in the tavern were absolutely enthralled by Sanchez’s arrival. Indeed, the supporters believe the Chile international will prove to be a marvellous acquisition, but time will tell if his performances will match expectation.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, United’s potential top-four rival Tottenham Hotspur managed to lure Paris Saint-Germain’s Lucas Moura (valued at £25.2 million by Transfermarkt) to North-London in a £23 million deal. The 25-year-old arrives at the club with a massive reputation despite the fact he has struggled for first-team football this season.
In the current economic climate, Moura’s price-tag of £23 million represents something of a steal considering his calibre and impressive history in the French capital. Given Moura’s modest price and the fact that United don’t have a single right-sided midfield players with their squad, it seems that Mourinho has made a huge mistake by failing to challenge Tottenham for his signature.
Mourinho has opted to deploy the likes of Anthony Martial, Juan Mata and occasionally Jesse Lingard in a right-sided midfield position, but none of the aforementioned players are naturally right-sided players who prefer to hug the touchline and stretch the opposition defence.
Moura would have provided Mourinho with that type dynamic and offered a unique option on the right-side of midfield, and his decision to decide against a move for the Brazilian could cost him at the end of the season.
Tottenham were boosted with a fresh sense of confidence after defeating Manchester United on Thursday night and announcing Moura’s arrival on the same evening, and their success in securing his signature could ultimately help them climb above United in the league table this season.
