Jose Mourinho’s impact at Manchester United has turned rather sour in recent weeks, with the Red Devils in the Transfer Tavern seriously questioning the Portuguese.
Still, even the most ardent of naysayers have thanked the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ for keeping a hold of an Old Trafford stalwart.
According to the Daily Mail, Michael Carrick was all but set to join boyhood heroes Newcastle United over the course of the summer, following the expiration of his deal.
However, the former Real Madrid and Chelsea coach is said to have blocked an emotional return to Tyneside for the 34-year-old, viewing him as an important member of the squad.
It was then that the ex-Tottenham man penned a new deal with United.
He scored the opening goal during the club’s win over Northampton in the EFL Cup, marking his first start of the season with a stunning strike.
While the strong competition for places in Mourinho’s midfield was always likely to impact the England international, the decision to keep him is indicative of his standing at the Theatre of Dreams.
How important will Carrick be to United this season? Should he be starting more? Let us know below…
