Luke Shaw is one of those players that the Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern desperately want to succeed at the club.
United this season, and for many a season since the departure of former captain Patrice Evra, have struggled to fill the left back position with a worthy contender. When our punters took a look back at the players that have stormed that left side of the Old Trafford pitch over the years, the likes of Denis Irwin, Mikael Silvestre and Gabriel Heinze all made lasting impressions.
Since then Luke Shaw has been given many an opportunity by Louis Van Gaal and current boss Jose Mourinho to prove he can be on the same level as his predecessors, but through injury and inconsistency Shaw has never got the momentum going to make that big push all our local United fans want him to get.
Besides the fact Evra himself had a very slow start to his United career, our landlord casts his mind back to his debut and getting substituted at halftime against Man City after a horrendous first half. He then bounced between the bench and the first team over the remainder of the season, never really holding down and making his mark until the season after.
If Shaw can get himself fit again to the point where he basically made United pay Southampton £30m for his services, he’s got still three quarters left of the season and his contract to change the Portuguese’s mind. Our regulars think it speaks volumes that, as soon as Evra was sacked by Marseille, he was instantly discussed by them as a potential man to bring back the club, so maybe him coming back until the end of the season might be a stroke of genius by Mourinho.
In addition to them getting a quality left-back, he could take Shaw under his wing for the reminder and release the inner potential to be a United full-back for years to come that all United fans could see when he first joined.
