José Mourinho and Manchester United should make the future of Ander Herrera at the club a priority and offer him a new deal before he decides to rather move to Spain or Italy.

According to an earlier report by Diario AS, via Football Espana, La Liga giants Atletico Madrid is one club that specifically would like to make use of the services of Herrera in order to provide their midfield with a more balanced and structured feel.

The report also indicates that last season's Champions League semifinalists AS Roma have expressed their interest in adding Herrera to their current squad. Manager Eusebio Di Francesco could be looking at Herrera as an option to help fill the voids left by Kevin Strootman and Radja Nainggolan who both left the club in the summer.

The 29-year-old Herrera however is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of the season and is available to start negotiations with other clubs at the beginning of the new year. But the only negotiation that should be making the headlines is the one between the player and the Red Devils about extending his stay at Old Trafford.

The Spanish international was brought to United in the summer of 2014 and was the very first signing made by then manager Louis van Gaal who took over from David Moyes. With more than a 150 appearances for the club since then, Herrera has become quite a famous figure in the club, but mostly due to the consistency he offers for the squad.

Although he has been often used as an impact player, Herrera is more than capable of stepping up to the occasion when he is named in the starting XI, like on Sunday when Mourinho started him in the Manchester Derby.

This season's performances have more than suggested that the club is expected to make a number of additions in the next two transfer windows and although reinforcements are very much needed at United, keeping Herrera in the process would be a good move to keep the experience and desire at the heart of the club's setup.

For Mourinho, the need to keep a player like that at the club might be bigger than he realises and it should avoid squad depth to become a problem as Herrera can operate in more than one specific position.
