According to the Manchester Evening News, Lyon manager Bruno Gensio has stated that Fekir could leave the club this summer. Manchester United have reportedly tabled an offer for the Frenchman.
Fekir has enjoyed a wonderful season with Lyon, racking up 18 goals and 7 assists in 30 Ligue 1 appearances. As well and providing end product, Fekir’s impressive interplay and creative abilities have helped bring the best out of the likes of Memphis Depay and Mariano Diaz.
The 24-year-old is also the kind of player this United side have been crying out for. The Red Devils’ forward options of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are formidable, but the squad lacks an arch creator in the mould their rivals boast in the form of Kevin de Bruyne, Christian Eriksen and Mesut Ozil.
Juan Mata is an excellent playmaker but lacks dynamism and at 30 is perhaps seeing his influence beginning to wane. In terms of athletic prowess, Mata doesn’t come close to Fekir’s levels of speed, power and agility.
Should Martial, as expected, move on from Old Trafford this summer, then an obvious vacancy in the squad will present itself to Fekir. His arrival would also give Mourinho a different kind of option for his front line. Whilst he is still very much a goal scorer, Fekir is also more of a creator than the likes of Martial and Rashford, who along with Lukaku and Sanchez, would be expected to thrive off of the Lyon man’s service.
Transfermarkt value the attacker at £54 million, meaning any deal would require a big chunk of Mournho’s budget to be spent. In return he’d be getting a player capable of firing United to a genuine title challenge.
Fekir is currently in Russia as part of Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus squad, but come the end of the tournament, United fans will hope that he heads to a home in Manchester rather than in Lyon.
