Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are buzzing after the Red Devils guaranteed Champions League football with a win over Arsenal at the weekend.
While Jose Mourinho’s side have been uninspiring at times, they look sure to secure second place in the Premier League. The Old Trafford faithful also have the FA Cup final to look forward to against Mourinho’s former club Chelsea. Despite being knocked out of the Champions League by Sevilla, it’s been a relatively successful season.
Mourinho invested heavily in his playing squad last summer and further strengthened his roster in January by bringing in Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal. Despite their spending, United are still way off the pace of rivals Manchester City who cruised to the Premier League title. More signings are needed in the summer if United are to be competitive next campaign.
A player who could save the Portuguese some money while adding a quality option to the squad is Napoli forward – Dries Mertens. The Belgian international has enjoyed another stellar campaign in the Serie A, scoring 17 goals and notching six assists. He is valued at £28.8m by Transfermarkt.
A striker of Mertens’ quality could well fetch a fee well over the £50m mark. However, the 30-year-old will be available for just £25m due to a release clause in his contract to clubs outside of Italy. Able to play centrally or on the wing, the former PSV man has created more chances and played more key passes per 90 minutes than all of United’s current attackers this season according to Squawka.
Indeed, having him as a foil for Romelu Lukaku would add the final touch to United’s best side since Sir Alex Ferguson’s last few glory days. A deal for Mertens would save United money while adding a world-class player to their attack, that’s for sure.
Manchester United fans, would Dries Mertens be a good signing? Let us know!
