While it’s currently unclear as to exactly whether or not Manchester United will delve into the January transfer market under the temporary stewardship of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Red Devils have previously enjoyed a huge amount of success when shopping in the New Year sales.
Indeed, so much so, that we recently asked our United-supporting readers to vote for their favourite ever mid-season purchase. Though the Alexis Sanchez saga may have been enough to put any Red Devil off the idea of them, the options we gave in names such as Juan Mata, Patrice Evra and Henrik Larsson will surely have reminded them of better times.
However, despite some of those popular names, there was one clear winner.
Picking up a whopping 78% of the vote, Old Trafford legend Nemanja Vidic was ranked as the club’s best ever January signing. The Serbian joined United from Spartak Moscow on January 5th 2006 and would go on to establish himself as one the club’s greatest ever captains, winning 5 Premier League titles and a Champions League, along with three League Cups and a club world cup.
Considering the defensive frailties currently plaguing United, they could certainly do with a signing in a similar mould this month.
