With Jose Mourinho having bagged the first piece of silverware during his reign in charge at Old Trafford, the Manchester United fans propping up the bar in the Transfer Tavern are delighted.
While the Portuguese didn’t always seem like the natural fit at Old Trafford, our punters are delighted about his work thus far and hope he’ll be in charge for years to come as they attempt to restore former glories.
So, you can imagine their delight at reports from Yahoo Sport. They’ve revealed the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ came close to joining Paris Saint-Germain over the course of the summer, when he was out of work following his sacking from Chelsea in December 2015.
“Jose had one foot and a half in PSG”, said a source.
“He almost went there.”
Les Parisians parted company with former United defender Laurent Blanc towards the back end of last season and reportedly targeted the 54-year-old as his replacement. Still, though he is said to have come close, the tax system in France is understood to have scuppered the move.
Due to the system in France, he would reportedly have had to command a €30m-per-year salary to rake in the supposed £10m his agents asked for, making it a gargantuan deal, even for the Ligue 1 giants.
