It’s fair to say that most of the Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern were expecting a busier summer of activity under Jose Mourinho, so the last few weeks have proved relatively frustrating.
Despite the arrival of Victor Lindelof, our resident Red Devils were hoping the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ would have landed more of the many targets to have been reported in the press by now, with the squad in need of a facelift before taking to Premier League and Champions League competition.
So, while reports from the Daily Mail do not centre around the notion of any big name arrivals, they have at least given our United-mad punters something to discuss.
According to their report, England international Chris Smalling is heading for talks with his Portuguese coach over his future at Old Trafford. The 27-year-old, who may ultimately lose his place to the aforementioned Lindelof, is reportedly eager to ensure he plays enough first-team football in order to bank his place at next year’s World Cup.
The likes of West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United are understood to be keen on the ex-Fulham man, though he is said to only fancy a move to another side in the Champions League, if he is to leave the Theatre of Dreams.
Smalling is thought to believe he will get enough football next term – considering the amount of competitions United will be playing – though another centre-back signing would reportedly change things.
Though he’s not always convinced since joining the club, many of our locals hope he stays, in order to cover the squad heading into a packed schedule next season.
