The Manchester United fans have been feeling positive in the Transfer Tavern this week after clinching a dramatic 3-2 victory in the Manchester derby last weekend, but recent reports have killed the mood somewhat.
Jose Mourinho’s side have played second-fiddle to their local-rivals for the vast majority of the season so far, but they finally salvaged a moment to savour last Saturday as they staged a second-half comeback to remember by overturning a 2 goal half-time deficit at the Etihad Stadium. Paul Pogba silenced his doubters and placed talk of a summer transfer away from the club on hold with a quick-fire brace to draw United level before Chris Smalling scored the winning goal in the 69th minute.
Rumours regarding Pogba’s future may have temporarily been put on hold, however, much to the dismay of the resident Red Devils propping up our bar, reports which link Anthony Martial with a move away from the club have emerged this week. According to French media outlet RMC Sport, Martial has rejected a new contract from the club due to his desire to leave Old Trafford this summer.
Considering Martial (valued at £58.5 million by Transfermarkt) is only 22-years-old, a deal which saw him leave the club this summer would be one of the worst deals United could complete during the transfer window.
Although there is no doubt that Martial lacks the consistency of a top class player at this moment in time, the quality he possesses at such a young age suggests he could blossom into one of the most devastating attacking players in world football in the seasons to come.
Losing him at this stage would be a huge step in the wrong direction for United as they would not only be losing a quality player, but proving to the rest of Europe that they are not an ideal destination for young players who want to realise the full extent of their potential – an impression which would serve to stagnate United’s long-term progress.
Whilst City are beginning to assert their dominance in English football it’s imperative that United keep hold of their most talented players, so Mourinho must do everything in his power to convince Martial to stay at the club at the end of the season and extend his contract beyond the summer of 2019.
