In the Transfer Tavern last night, Manchester United fans were left confused as Luke Shaw wasn’t even named on the bench for the club’s 0-0 draw at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The left-back who signed for United for big money from Southampton back in 2014 has failed to hold down a first-team place recently, despite his recent impressive form.
Shaw has shown United fans what they’ve been missing recently as the club have kept clean sheets in seven of the ten games in which the 22-year-old has played the full 90 minutes so far this season. However, Mourinho has opted to play the veteran winger-turned-defender Ashley Young for the bulk of the campaign so far, much to the annoyance of many supporters.
The decision to leave the marauding full-back out of the squad yesterday didn’t sit right with fans however as recent performances against Huddersfield twice and Yeovil made fans believe Shaw warranted a place in the starting eleven during the Red Devils’ crucial Champions League fixture.
Shaw (rated at £13.5m on Transfermarkt) will hope he can continue to impress in a bid to regain his place in what has been a shaky United back line over the last few weeks. However, with big games ahead in the Premier League against Chelsea and Liverpool before the return of Sevilla, chances are there for him to cement himself a place in the first team.
With that in mind, here’s a look at the reaction online.
We are really hard to watch. Sanchez signing doesn’t make sense when we play the way we do. Opts for Young at LB when you have Shaw available and Mourinho hasn’t figured out how to get the most of our attacking players. It’s not even depressing it’s just ‘meh’ #MUFC

Jose’s team selection is the most baffling. Continuously picking smalling, young, dropping shaw, Pogba, Real Madrid done a number on his methods. I’m all for him but if we don’t win anything this year, he has to take most of the blame #mufc

Shaw should be starting weekly we need all full proper defenders in defence. As half decent as Young is he's a winger not a left back #mufc

A month ago Mourinho called Shaw one of the best LBs in the world. He has played only once since then I think. Can’t belive Mou, a guy who refused to play Rooney CM because he plays specialists for each position is happy playing 2 converted wingers as full backs.#MUFC #SEVMUN

Thought Lindelof was good. Still wish Shaw would get a chance. #mufc
