According to the Express, a deal taking Mario Mandzukic to Old Trafford could be edging closer.
United boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly been a long-time admirer of the Croatian target man, and he could be the ideal player to compete with Romelu Lukaku up top for the Red Devils.
On paper the move makes sense. Mandzukic is a proven goal scorer at the top level who fits the Mourinho mould, and his age means that he’d provide good back up to Lukaku rather than being someone who would push the Belgian out of the team.
Mandzukic’s arrival in Manchester could spell the end for some current United stars’ time at the club though.
Martial looked out of place already at United, and unhappy with his lack of first-team action.
Rumours of his departure have refused to die down, but the arrival of Mandzukic could hasten his exit further.
Otherwise, Martial would be vying with Lukaku, Rashford, Sanchez and Mandzukic for a starting role in the forward line, and in Mourinho’s eyes that’s a battle the Frenchman is already losing.
There was a time when James Wilson was considered Manchester United’s brightest attacking talent for the future.
Since then though, disappointing loan moves, injury troubles, and the departure of Louis van Gaal have halted Wilson’s progression towards becoming a star for United.
Now, at 22-years-old, with Lukaku, Martial, Rashford, and now potentially Mandzukic ahead of him in the pecking order, the English youngster’s chance at Old Trafford looks to have gone.
