Manchester United punters in the Transfer Tavern are sharing with our landlord their mixed feelings over a potential swap deal involving Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants famously came close to signing Red Devils No.1 David De Gea in 2015, but the paperwork missed the summer transfer deadline.
Don Balon claim the Spain international is back on the agenda at the Bernabeu, but now under contract until 2019, United certainly won’t be forced to accept an offer from the European champions in the summer.
However, president Florentino Perez is hoping a swap deal involving defender Raphael Varane could convince Jose Mourinho to part with De Gea, who has amassed the second-most clean sheets (10) of any Premier League goalkeeper this term.
De Gea is rated as one of the top glovesmen in world football but Mourinho, who signed the France international in 2011 whilst serving as Bernabeu boss, is a known fan of Varane’s. In fact, back in 2014, after returning to Chelsea, Mourinho described the 23-year-old as “the best central defender in the world.”
Varane is a key figure in the Los Blancos defence, making 18 starts in La Liga this season, and is described by Don Balon as one of Zinedine Zidane’s ‘untouchables‘. But the Spanish publication claim Perez could outrank Real Madrid’s head coach in a bid to land De Gea.
