The Man United XI Solskjaer should have built

Manchester United now find themselves back in race for a top four spot having enjoyed an inspired run of form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Red Devils have certainly turned a corner since Jose Mourinho left the club, with consistency, goals and defensive solidity being ensured at all times.

Sadly, one thing that has taken its toll on Manchester United’s campaign is injuries. And, with a top four place still up for grabs, the Europa League knockout stages coming up and silverware in the FA Cup still being a possibility, it comes as some surprise that Solskjaer hasn’t gone all out up until this point in the January transfer window.

Therefore, in an ideal world where injuries aren’t a thing and if United’s January transfer window business was done differently, this is what Man United’s XI would look like…

David De Gea has established himself as arguably the best goalkeeper in world football over the past couple of seasons, as he continues to play a monumental part in-between the sticks.

Manchester United could have done with bringing in Nikola Milenkovic at the heart of their defence. The Red Devils have been interested (as per the Mirror) in the Serbian for quite a while, but things have gone quiet since Solskjaer took charge at Old Trafford. He has plenty of potential and is already making headlines over in Italy at Fiorentina, so United will be gutted not to have secured a deal for him thus far.

Victor Lindelof just edges the defensive battle over Chris Smalling as the Sweden international has been influential at the heart of the defence since Solskjaer took over.

The only other change that was required this month was to bring in a replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who has been absolutely useless this season. Manchester United reportedly expressed an interest (as per the Telegraph) in Marko Arnautovic prior to the January transfer window, but they haven’t pursued a deal this month.

Indeed, the likes of Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford have been United’s two star performers in the final third this season, but one thing the Red Devils still need is a forward who can find the back of the net, create and hold up play, which are three things that Arnautovic thrives at. So, United have missed a trick by not swooping in for his services up until this point in the window.
