Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting a big transfer window as they look to close the gap to rivals Manchester City.
Jose Mourinho has wasted no time in revamping his squad now the transfer window is now open. With City yet to complete a marquee signing, United have spent £73m on new talent – splashing £53m to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk and £20m on Porto full-back, Diogo Dalot. Our punters hope the spending continues as their first game draws closer.
Our regulars have been keeping a close eye on the World Cup in Russia, scouting for potential transfer targets that Mourinho could bring to Old Trafford. A new centre-back could be a priority for the Portuguese in the summer, and plenty of names have impressed at the tournament. Stuttgart defender, Benjamin Pavard, should be on his shortlist.
Valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old has featured in three games for France, starting against Argentina in the round of 16, scoring arguably the goal of the tournament so far. Pavard is naturally a centre-back but can also play at right-back making him an excellent option for the Red Devils.
He made 34 appearances in the Bundesliga last season, scoring one goal. Pavard is a modern-day defender who is an excellent passer of the ball and capable of starting attacks from the back. He is also defensively sound, no defender in the Bundesliga made more interceptions last season (Squawka).
Stuttgart are adamant their star player will not leave for anything less than £44m this summer. United need to secure his signature before it’s too late.
