There’s a Paul Pogba replacement waiting in the wings

Manchester United were unable to sign a new centre-back before the transfer window slammed shut.

Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign a new defender with Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng all reportedly on the Portuguese’s shortlist. With the Red Devils attempted to get deals over the line before Thursday’s 5pm deadline, but were unable to complete any business which will have no doubt infuriated the United manager. United were also rocked by reports which suggested Paul Pogba wanted to leave the club.

Barcelona emerged as favourites to sign the former Juventus midfielder. However, United were unwilling to sell their star midfielder so late into the window with no time to source a replacement. The Old Trafford faithful will be glad to see Pogba staying put in Manchester for the time being. However, Barca will reportedly employ a similar strategy to signing Philippe Coutinho and attempt to bring him to the Nou Camp in January.

If Pogba leaves, the only man United should target is Lazio superstar – Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. Valued at £81m by Transfermarkt, the 23-year-old enjoyed a stunning season in the Serie A, scoring 14 goals and registering eight assists in all competitions last year. His arrival would definitely soften the blow of losing Pogba.

Blessed with excellent technical ability, Milinkovic-Savic possesses great strength and a massive frame which makes him a frightening prospect. He has all the attributes to be successful in the Premier League and complete United’s midfield for the next decade. United are one of the few clubs who could afford to sign the youngster regardless of the fee that would receive for Pogba.

Replacing the Frenchman with Milinkovic-Savic could prove to be a masterstroke for the Red Devils.
