Transfer flashbacks: Alexis Sanchez

Transfer flashbacks: Alexis Sanchez

On the 22nd January 2018, Manchester United announced the capture of Alexis Sanchez after an eventful New Year window that saw the Red Devils spirit him away to Old Trafford instead of bitter rivals Manchester City.

The Chilean, who had proven to be one of the best players in the Premier League with Arsenal, was regarded as quite the coup for Jose Mourinho and his men, giving United the kind of attacking edge to perhaps catch City in the coming campaign.

However, things haven’t worked out quite as we might have expected.

The Chilean has just never quite looked the part at Old Trafford. Although his ability is clear, he never seems to fit the tactical system the Portuguese boss employs deployed by Jose Mourinho. The former Barcelona man often slows attacks down, and is ponderous on the ball when United are on the counter-attack. Arsenal fans are likely currently believing they received the better deal in the Sanchez-Mkhitaryan swap-deal. Jose Mourinho has singled out Sanchez as an under-performer in his side, it’s been that bad.

The 29-year-old winger looks weary in Manchester, but he shone for Arsenal. His tight control, flair and composure made it appear that he might be the perfect player for the Red Devils. In North London, he looked a cut above any other player the Emirates outfit had to offer. In Manchester, he has often, in fact, looked the weak-link in the United side, and he has not been guaranteed a starting place. Alexis Sanchez looks a far cry from the player Manchester United fans thought they were getting.
