This article forms part of our Valuation Evaluation feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at the increase or decrease of a player’s Transfermarkt valuation and whether it is justified or not.
Following a very bright start to life as a Manchester United player, Daniel James has really struggled at Old Trafford in recent months.
In fact, his goal in the Red Devils’ 5-0 thrashing of LASK in the Europa League was the Welsh youngster’s first since the end of last August, putting end to a barren run of 32 games without scoring (per BBC Sport). It is a run that certainly makes for grim reading, but James should not feel disheartened. He has still shown a lot of promise this season, so much so much that his market valuation has sky rocketed.
According to Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old had a market valuation of £10.8m at the end of last June. That number has since gone up to £25.2m, which is hardly a surprise.
Nine goal contributions for a youngster making the transition from the Championship to the Premier League is no mean feat. And even during that underwhelming run where he was struggling to conjure up much in the final third, James was still causing opposition defenders problems with his pace and ability to get past a player.
No Manchester United attacker is being fouled more times per game than the Wales international, who is being chopped down 1.9 times per league game (via WhoScored). Out of the whole United squad, only Scott McTominay is being fouled more often (2.3), showing the kind of headache James can be for the other team.

Following the arrival of Bruno Fernandes, the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revolution at Old Trafford really looks to have taken off. And with links to Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho refusing to go away, you would have to assume that the Norwegian is not done yet.
However, that should not faze James, who has shown Solskjaer that he has plenty to offer.
Manchester United fans, how much do you think James is worth in today’s market? Let us know in the comment section below!
