Unsung Hero: Marcos Rojo plays his part in clean sheet as Manchester United are held by AZ Alkmaar

It was another evening to forget for Manchester United last night as they were held by Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar in the group stages of the Europa League.

Although it wasn’t a defeat, most would have expected the Red Devils to have come away from the Netherlands with three points last night.

However, after a cagey encounter which saw the possession stats pretty evenly distributed (53% to 47% in AZ’s favour), a draw was probably the fairest result and sees United drop to second in Group L behind leaders Partizan Belgrade on goal difference.

The main positive United can take from their efforts in Holland was the fact that they kept a clean sheet, their first in four outings.

Centre-back Marcos Rojo has seen first-team chances limited so far this season. The Argentine is still yet to feature for United in the Premier League, but has started both of the club’s matches in Europe so far, and last night put in a solid performance.

WhoScored awarded the South American with an overall rating of 7.05/10, after he registered a pass completion rate of 81.2% and executed seven accurate long balls.

The 29-year-old also made a total of eight clearances for his side last night, six more than full-back Diogo Dalot, who made the second-most clearances with two (WhoScored). Rojo even successfully completed a dribble last night; a rarity from the tough-tackling centre-half.

United may not have come away from the Netherlands with the result they wanted last night, but there were some promising individual performances on show.

19-year-old left-back Brandon Williams impressed on his senior debut for the club, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailing his performance as ‘top class’ (as per Metro).

As for Rojo, he has struggled for form at Old Trafford and rarely makes an appearance for the club, proven by his lack of playing time in the Premier League, but did impress when handed the opportunity yesterday evening – credit where credit’s due.

Will Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finish the season?
