Why Man United’s reported midfield deal could be their smartest in years

For the Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern, recent reports suggesting Jose Mourinho was lining up a new deal for midfielder Michael Carrick came as great news.

All of our punters found themselves toasting the reports from the Sun as Mourinho reportedly looks to keep one of the most popular players at Old Trafford around for another year at least.

Not only is the 35-year-old one of the most trophy-laden stars at Old Trafford, but his stoic presence in United’s midfield this term has gone some way in getting the best out of word record man Paul Pogba.

It seems little about the Red Devils in recent season has made any sort of sense, with even this summer’s moves not instantly looking like working out until recently.

However, keeping Carrick around could really be a masterstroke for a side who really haven’t known how to go about getting what they want for a number of years now.

While further big-money arrivals at the Theatre of Dreams are obviously expected, the fact top brass look like keeping a man who can help others flourish in the side is an obvious sign they are putting football manners first.

As we’ve seen with Real Madrid in years gone by, an obsession with simply buying the biggest names and shoe-horning them into a side rarely ever yields much in the way of on-field success.

Rather being hell-bent on landing a big-name midfield partner for Pogba right away, the idea of having Carrick (never the most glamorous of individuals, despite his immense talent) alongside him for at least another year is a reassuring one for our United supporting locals.

Though nothing is yet signed, sealed and delivered in regards to the former England international, putting football matters first can help build success for the future, rather than endlessly chasing the latest Galactico.

As United have found out first hand, that rarely ever works.
