Why Mourinho should trust this World Cup winner more at Man United

The Football Transfer Tavern is full of punters, reeling after Manchester United’s shock defeat to Watford making it three losses in a row for Mourinho’s men.

The Portuguese has so far tended to stick with his bigger name, with Wayne Rooney given plenty of chances in the attacking midfield role.

Still, as of yet, the club captain hasn’t really produced anything special.

One player who could do brilliant things for the Red Devils in that position is Juan Mata and it is about time Mourinho trusted him enough to play him in that role.

Since the Portuguese manager came in, the Spaniard has only really been used on the right and even though he has done relatively well, he would be able to impact the game much more from a more central position.

Where Rooney has often caused play to stagnate, the Spaniard’s quick thinking would help United to quickly attack teams in a much more dangerous way.

Furthermore, his passing ability would ensure that players such as Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Zlatan Ibrahimovic would have all the chances they could wish for.

He may not be the tallest or strongest, though he is hard working and is good at making short sprints retrieve the ball back.

There may be an argument for Henrikh Mkhitaryan should be playing in that role, but his best role is arguably on the right hand side and so he should be getting his chances there when they arrive.

One thing for sure is that Mata has shown before that he is capable of orchestrating a side from the central attacking midfield role. Another is that in his time in that same role, Rooney hasn’t shown himself to have the credentials to take Manchester United forward playing in that position.

Jose Mourinho has already pushed Mata out of the equation once, when he was at Chelsea, but it’s time for the manager to trust the World Cup winner to produce the goods in his natural position.

Should Mata be handed more of a starring role at United? Let us know below…
