The Manchester United fans in the Transfer Tavern were delighted with their sides 2-0 victory over Benfica last night, as they moved within touching distance of a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League.
Benfica goalkeeper Mile Svilar was at fault for United’s only goal in the reverse fixture two weeks ago, but it took a moment of fortune to carry the ball over the line for United’s opener this time around. Nemanja Mati, who has started building a reputation for his ability to strike the ball from long-range in recent months, crashed an effort from distance onto the foot of the post in first-half stoppage-time, but the ball rebounded back into the Benfica goal via the back of the sprawling Svilar.
The young Belgian must have been cursing his luck after he had earlier saved a penalty from Anthony Martial.
Daley Blind wrapped up the 3 points for Mourinho’s side from the spot in the 78th minute after Rashford was brought down inside the box.
Although many United players deserved a mention for their performance last night, it was the impact of 20-year-old Scott McTominay that really captured the imagination of the onlooking United faithful.
Playing next to Matic at the heart of the midfield in his first Champions League start for the club, the young Scotsman impressed fans with his composure and intelligence on the ball, and they will be expecting to see plenty more of him as the season unfolds.
With injuries piling up at Old Trafford, McTominay certainly looks like a new midfield option in a deep-lying role.
A large handful of United faithful have already started drawing comparisons between McTominay and fellow countryman Darren Fletcher due to his box-to-box style of play.
Here’s how the fans reacted to McTominay’s performance last night…
Congratulations on the debut and a very accomplished performance. Look forward to seeing you in the starting XI time and again.
