The United fans in the Transfer Tavern remain bitterly disappointed with their side’s performance at Huddersfield, and are expecting to see a reaction from their heroes when they face Swansea this evening.
United have come in for plenty of justified criticism in the British media following their shock defeat to Huddersfield, not least from manager Jose Mourinho. It is a rarity to hear Mourinho conduct a post-match interview following a defeat, without identifying a scapegoat to explain the outcome and diverting the spotlight away from his players in the process. The fact that Mourinho had no excuses in the aftermath of the game underlines the extent of how poorly United performed on the day.
Throughout the game, the entirety of the United side were well below the high-standard they have set for themselves this season and every player was deserving of substantial criticism. However, it is interesting to hear that Mourinho reportedly, according to the Sun, had particularly strong words of disapproval to fire in the direction of Anthony Martial and Ander Herrera in the post-match dressing room.
Mourinho’s scathing attack on two midfield players is hardly surprising considering the importance he places on his midfielders to win their battles further up the pitch, in order to relieve the burden on his defenders.
The purpose of Mourinho singling out Herrera and Martial for criticism may purely have been to provoke a positive reaction from these two players in their upcoming fixtures, but with both players struggling for first-team action this season, the report may point to deeper rooted issues in the United dressing room.
Mourinho has proven before with the sale of Juan Mata to United when he was manager of Chelsea, that he is willing to let top quality players leave the club if he feels they are not suited to his defensive system.
And with rumours already beginning to emerge linking Martial with a move away from Old Trafford this season, there is every chance that Martial could become another high-profile Mourinho sale.
As for Ander Herrera, his future should be safe for now given the tremendous defensive capabilities he demonstrated last season, but he will need to make amends for his display against Huddersfield on his next outing for United, if he wishes to remain a firm part of Mourinho’s future plans at the club.
