Manchester United’s decision makers just have to get Jerome Boateng deal over the line

Manchester United have pursued a centre-back all summer long.

Jose Mourinho is seemingly eager to bolster his defence ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline. The Portuguese seemingly remains unconvinced by both Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof, after their respective struggles last year. The former Chelsea boss surely wants to add a world-class defender to his starting eleven in order to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title next year.

The Red Devils have actively pursued Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld, but Spurs are unwilling to let the Belgian leave on the cheap. Their stance forced United to switch focus to Leicester’s Harry Maguire but the Foxes were understood to want a world-record fee to allow the England international to leave which has thwarted Mourinho’s plans. Reports suggest United will now attempt to sign Bayern Munich defender – Jerome Boateng. Valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, the German would be an excellent addition to the squad.

The 29-year-old established himself as one of the best defenders in world football after leaving Manchester City for Munich back in 2011. He has made over 250 appearances for the Bavarians and has lifted six Bundesliga titles and one Champions League trophy during his time in Germany.

Despite his excellence, Boateng has struggled for fitness in recent years. Bayern reportedly want £50m for the defender which would represent fantastic value if United can keep him fit. However, it’s a massive sum of money to spend on someone with an injury list as long as Boateng’s. United will face competition from PSG for his services meaning the Red Devils might have to offer the Germany international a hefty wage packet to secure the move before Thursday’s deadline.

With just days remaining in the window, this is a deal United simply must get over the line.
