The Russian number one has been linked to many top European clubs, particularly Manchester United.
Currently playing at CSKA Moscow Akinfeev is set to be hot property in this summers transfer window. Edwin Van Der Sar is till putting in some world class performances but Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak have struggled to impress when given opportunities this season.
Akinfeev is a 23 year old goalkeeper who has 39 international caps and is Guus Hiddink’s regular number one. A prodigious talent Akinfeev made his national debut at just 18 years of age. He has also tasted success, as an integral part of the CSKA side that lifted the UEFA Cup in 2004/5.
Due to his comparatively slight stature for a professional goalkeepr Akinfeev has drawn some comparisons to Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas. The following clip shows the agility and reflexes that go some way to justify such a claim.
Akinfeev also has a reputation for penalty saves as well as bravely rushing out at a strikers feet. He has performed regularly in the Champions League, equipping himself admirably against Arsenal and Manchester United in recent seasons.
CSKA will no doubt demand a high price for their captain, but if they are willing to sell there will be several suitors looking very closely at the Russian.
